What If I Don't Have Anything To Say?
As an academic overachiever, I became very skilled at giving the right answer and avoiding the wrong answers.
In academics, everything has a right and wrong answer. Even so-called "subjective" tests. The wrong answer to a writing prompt is a blank page, of course. Automatic zero.
So it's common sense to write something rather than nothing. Maybe you'll get partial credit, at least.
Naturally, I thought social interaction had the same rules. There are right things to say and wrong things to say. And I should always have something to say.
So I memorized lines and routines – in preparation for striking up conversations with beautiful women. I tried to plan for every contingency. Every possible thing she could throw at me. If I just studied enough, I could come up with the right answer in the moment.
Just like school. Right?
Wrong. This led me down a path where interacting with women was terrifying. There is no right and wrong, yet I was always worried about being wrong.
Worried about submitting the blank page.
Worried about not having anything to say.
Do you have the same worry? Does your stomach turn over when there is silence?
After YEARS of this self-inflicted torture, I decided to just embrace not knowing what to say. I decided to play with silence. Check out my 5 minute speech for what I learned about silence.
Do you freeze up around attractive women? Have you never kissed a girl? Have you never had a girlfriend? Do you feel that everybody else has friends but you don’t? I’ve been there. And it sucks.
Here's my 30 second story:
I use a wheelchair and I have a degenerative muscle condition. I was always the shy, nerdy kid, and I had ZERO success with women – my first kiss didn't happen until I was 22 years old. I went to an Ivy League University and landed my dream job at Microsoft, but I was miserable. After the girl I was in love with told me, "I don't know how any woman could be attracted to a guy in a wheelchair," I hired a dating coach to turn my life around. Now, my social calendar is booked weeks in advance, and I get to choose the friends that I really want to spend time with. Now, I've been on 60+ dates, I've enjoyed sex and intimacy with several women, and I've had incredible girlfriends.
